A Cover with Eric Carle

Scholastic Parent & Child, December 2013 cover

It’s somewhat rare but really exciting when my images get mixed with other media. On the cover of the latest issue of Scholastic Parent & Child, our super fun cover model (she really rocked out to Katy Perry all day and knew all the words!) is transported into a winter wonderland courtesy of Eric Carle. Carle, 84, is a picture book illustrator and designer most famous for The Very Hungry Caterpillar, a bright and colorful classic. I’m honored to share a cover with him! Big thanks to Carolyn Veith for her vision.

New GF Bakery in Charleston, SC

Sweet Radish Bakeshop, gluten free bakery, Charleston SC

I had the good fortune of traveling to Charleston last week on a shoot with the lovelies at Garden & Gun Magazine. And, oh, Charleston: always so pretty, friendly and delicious. I love love love eating there. On this brief trip I kept it kind of in the Mike Lata family with super satisfying dinner visits to the Ordinary and FIG. There was also a very nice post-shoot crew stop at the bar at Sean Brock’s Husk for the Barrel-Aged Manhattan. When my afternoon sweet tooth kicked in on our travel day, I Googled “gluten free Charleston bakery” and came up with the extremely new and one and only official GF bakery in the city, Sweet Radish Bakeshop. This turned out to be quite a happy discovery and little did I know I was still kinda keeping it in the Lata family! See more…

PDN Kept My Promo

Printed pieces are often a labor of love. The editing, the stressing over the editing, the designing, the printing process, the selection of materials. I wanted to put together a piece that highlighted the range of subject matter I shoot but also conveyed a cohesive aesthetic and mood. Conor Risch at PDN thinks I was successful in doing so. And that makes me really happy. Take a peek inside what you see below and read Conor’s kind words here!

A New Crop of Healthy Cookbooks

Over the last year or so I’ve photographed quite the mix of healthy cookbooks and they’re all about to hit the shelves! Reed Alexander, from Nickelodeon’s iCarly, offers family-friendly recipes that have Bill Clinton talking. Radio personality Robin Quivers shares her truly delicious vegan favorites (I want the Chocolate Coconut Mousse right now!) And bloggers after my own heart open up the worlds of brunch and slow cooking with gluten-free versions of favorites like biscuits, scones, and waffles and traditionally flour-laden soups, stews, and braises. It’s almost nesting time, so keep your eyes open for the covers below at your local bookstore!

Stopover: Rockport Harbor, ME

I made a little lunch stopover in Rockport Harbor, Maine last week. It was actually a tad out of the way but totally worth the drive: some really talented people I met a couple of years ago at Salt Water Farm’s cooking school have opened a cozy yet airy restaurant on the main street in town. Salt Water Farm at Union Hall is owned by Annemarie Ahearn who has worked for Saveur, Dan Barber at Blue Hill, Tom Colicchio, and Slow Food. When I met her in 2011 I was shooting a story for Afar about her nearby farm and cooking school. See more…

Summer Berry Picking

Although I’m a bit late posting this from the June issue of Parents, I’m just in time for berry season! I photographed this story last summer on a 90+ degree day and right up to the very moment of torrential rain and tornado warnings. Fun and crazy. And so beautiful! Prop styling by Deoborah Williams and food styling by Simon Andrews. Find the recipes for blueberry scones, three-berry foccacia and more here. See more…

In the Last Weeks of Spring

Still life of fava beans, asparagus, lettuce, apricots, almonds
A couple of weekends ago I ventured up to Cornwall, CT with prop stylist Molly FitzSimons, food stylist Mariana Velasquez, and some of our friends. We made beautiful photographs, celebrated a few birthdays (3, 43, and 83!), and ate some delicious spring foods. Mariana created recipes for leg of lamb, grilled favas, spring vegetable soup with poached egg and bacon, and panna cotta with early strawberries just to name a few. I was in my element as I grew up nearby and can never get enough of the winding roads, cows, rivers, and verdant rolling hills. I’m so inspired by the landscape of my upbringing and the bounty that begins there in the spring. Maybe this will inspire some spring cooking for you this weekend…or if you’re in New York City with me, a trip to the country. See more…
